Odysseus
The Musical epic
from Homer's Odyssey
The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic attributed to the bard Homer, who would have composed after the Iliad, the late eighth century BC. AD It is considered one of the great masterpieces of literature and with the Iliad, as one of the founders of European civilization poems.
The Odyssey describes the return home of the hero Ulysses, who after the Trojan War, in which he played a key role, takes ten years to return to his island of Ithaca, to find his wife Penelope, he delivers suitors, and his son Telemachus. During his sea voyage, made perilous by the wrath of the god Poseidon, Odysseus encounters many mythological characters, like the nymph Calypso, princess Nausicaa, the Cyclops, the sorceress Circe and the mermaids. The epic also contains a number of episodes that complement the story of the Trojan War, such as the construction of the Trojan Horse and the fall of the city, which are not mentioned in the Iliad.
The Odyssey has inspired many literary and artistic works over the centuries, and the term "odyssey" has become par excellence a common name for a "travel story more or less hectic and filled with unique adventures."
